Implants

Often the best solution for replacing missing teeth is with dental implants. Since 1984, Dr. Rozema has taken extensive advanced training about implant restorations. Dr. Rozema can help you understand about dental implants and determine if dental implants are the best choice for you.

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that has been surgically placed in the jawbone and acts as an anchor to stabilize an artificial tooth. Dental implants can replace one, some, or all missing teeth and are the most permanent, natural-looking substitute on the market. Dental implants are made from different types of metallic and/or bone-like ceramic materials that are compatible with body tissue.

Why Should I Choose Dental Implants (Implants vs. Dentures)?

Dental implants closely resemble the look and “feel” of your real teeth. They don’t rely on neighboring teeth and tissue for support (unlike traditional bridges or dentures), so there is less risk of infection, periodontal disease, and bone loss. Dental implants actually help hold the bone in the areas where they are placed because they act the same as the natural tooth root.

If you are missing most or all of your teeth and wear dentures, dental implants will provide stability and security. Dentures attached to implants won’t slip, click, or affect your speech like traditional dentures, so you can feel confident when talking and eating. Dental implants are becoming the alternative of choice to traditional dentures.

Am I a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Because dental implants require surgery, patients must be in good health, both general and oral, have healthy gums and sufficient bone to support the implant. Some chronic problems and diseases may decrease your success rate.

FAQs

How Much Do Dental Implants Cost?

Fees depend on the individual case and the extent of work performed. In general, implants are more expensive than traditional dentures or bridge work, and most insurance companies do not cover the cost of the procedure. You should contact your insurance company if you have questions about your particular policy. Our office offers financing options through Care Credit that make implants affordable to almost everyone.

How Long is the Procedure and Recovery Time? Will I Be in Pain?

Implants first entail a surgical procedure to place the anchor in the bone. Depending on how many implants are to be placed, the surgery can take up to several hours. The implants will need to heal in the bone for three to six months, after which a second surgery will uncover the implant. After the gums have had several weeks to heal, artificial teeth are made and fitted with posts to the anchor portion of the implant. Because several fittings may be required, this step can take one to two months to complete.

What is the Success Rate of Dental Implants?

The success rate for implants depends on the tooth’s purpose and location in the mouth. The success rate is about 95 percent for those placed in the front of the lower jaw and 85 percent for those placed in the sides and rear of the upper jaw. These rates are continuously improving with the advent of new techniques.

How Do I Maintain Dental Implants?

Poor oral hygiene is a big reason why some implants fail. It is important to floss and brush around the fixtures at least twice a day. Our staff will give you specific instructions on how to care for your new implants. Additionally, seeing our hygienist for cleanings up to four times per year may be necessary to ensure the health of your implants.
